Myanmar Airways International (MAI) stated that it has begun direct nonstop flights between Chennai and Yangon, increasing connectivity between the two countries. Between the two cities, an Embraer E190LR aircraft with 98 seats (six in business class and 92 in economy) would be used.
After Delhi, Kolkata, and Gaya, Chennai is the most recent city to be served by MAI. The first flight arrived at Chennai airport on Saturday and was greeted with a traditional water salute by officials from the Airports Authority of India.
The new flights will also commemorate 75 years of friendly relations between India and Myanmar. On the maiden flight, about 48 people landed in Chennai from Yangon, while 70 passengers flew from Chennai to Yangon.
Honorary consul of Myanmar Professor Ranganathan J and Chennai Airport Director S S Raju formally launched the service by lighting a traditional lamp at the city’s international departure terminal. Travellers from Chennai may now easily visit tourist attractions in Myanmar, including Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Ngapali Beach.
The new flight connection is intended to enhance both countries’ trade as well as their health and leisure tourism sectors. The flights will take place every Saturday, with the aircraft departing Yangon at 8 a.m. local time and arriving in Chennai at 10.15 a.m. The return flight from Chennai will depart at 11.15 a.m. and arrive in Yangon at 3.15 p.m.
According to a press statement, Myanmar Airways International now flies to 18 international and 18 domestic destinations and has smooth interline agreements with 34 carriers. Myanmar Airlines International is represented in the country by the STIC Travel Group.
