Obesity is defined as excessive or abnormal fat accumulation. Body mass index (BMI) over 30 is considered as obese.
Weight gain is mainly caused due to family history, surroundings, metabolism and even medical conditions including Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Cushing Syndrome, Hypothyroidism and Osteoarthritis. Stress, low mood, low quality sleep and changing emotions can also affect eating habit. There are certain complications for obesity if not treated properly. It could lead to hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnoea, osteoarthritis, type-2 diabetes, depression and anxiety.
It is mainly diagnosed based on skinfold thickness tests, waist-to-hip comparison, screening tests such as ultrasound, CT scan and MRI scan. Obesity can be managed by reducing the kilo-joule intake, increasing physical activity, consuming weight-loss medicines, weight loss surgeries and complementary therapies and surgeries.
