Ratna Pathak opens up about ‘not getting her due in the industry’

The actor Ratna Pathak Shah is known for her candid opinions on a variety of topics. She has previously appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Mandi (1983) and Mirch Masala (1987). She talked about not getting her due in the industry and how several actors, such as Deepti Naval, were rarely given opportunities in those films. She also revealed that a “wonderful actress” like Deepti Naval was never given her due in the parallel cinema space.

Ratna, who is currently promoting her next film, Kutch Express, revealed in a recent interview that there was a star system in the 1980s that existed not only in the commercial cinema space but also in the art film circuit. “Deepti Naval, jaise wonderful actress, ko kitne role mile us tarah ki filmon mein, aap us zamane ke filmein dekhe?” she said during a conversation. Naseer, Om, Shabana, and Smita, wahi chaa r the na bande! (Considering the films of the time, how many films could a wonderful actress like Deepti Naval do? Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah), Om (Puri), Shabana (Azmi), and Smita (Patil) were the only figures.”

She also mentioned names like Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur, emphasising that there were many actors who did not get their due even in non-commercial cinema. Ratna stated in an interview with Siddharth Kannan that television allowed her to grow as an actor and try new things. “That was a fantastic time. Usme sikhne ka avsar mila, comedy ke vaja se sikhne ka avsar mila.

Deepti revealed in last year’s Sahitya Aaj Tak discussion that she had stopped getting roles after getting married. “It was as if my talent had completely faded. That happened to me; I went through that stage. I went several years without working. I had no idea what was going on because I had always thought of myself as an artist. Who are you if you don’t get to work or create? I needed to get back. That was one of the things that contributed to my depression,” said the actress.

Ratna will next be seen in Kutch Express, her first lead role in Gujarati cinema. She appeared in John Abraham’s Attack and Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar last year. In the latter, she portrayed a Gujarati mother who wanted her daughter-in-law to abort her daughter. Ratna is well-known for her roles in Sarabhai VS Sarabhai and films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, Golmaal 3, Kapoor & Sons, and Khoobsurat.
