The first day of Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor’s Luv Ranjan film, ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar,’ earned 15.73 crore, making it India’s highest opening for a rom-com. The film was released yesterday on the occasion of Holi.
The film is reportedly registered as having the highest opening for a romantic comedy (rom-com) in India after surpassing the first day figures of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal.’ The 2017 film had done a business of Rs. 15.25 crore on its opening day.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’s day one collection on Twitter as “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar performs VERY WELL on day one… Holi festivities gave us a boost in several states, but we lost a significant chunk of business where Holi was celebrated a day early [Mumbai; working day] … 15.73 crore India business on Wednesday.” Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar also ‘did well’ on day one, according to Box Office India. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’s opening day collection was also compared to other rom-coms, according to the portal.
Beating the highest opening day for a rom-com at the domestic box office, surpassing Jab Harry’s collection by nearly 50 lakhs. Meanwhile, Shaandaar (2015), starring Alia Bhatt and Shahid Kapoor, has become India’s third highest opening rom-com with a day one collection of Rs 13.10 crore. Cocktail (2012) by Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan fell to fourth place with 11 crores, with Ajay Devgn’s De De Pyaar De (2019) taking fifth place with 10.41 crore.
He also shared ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’s’ day one business at national chains. According to him, the film grossed Rs. 7.85 crore in national theaters on its first day. This places it in second place so far this year, ahead of Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada, which earned 2.92 crore on its first day in theaters. Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film, remains firmly on top with 27.08 crore at the box office on day one at national chains.
Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor star in the lead roles in ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.’ For the first time in the film, Ranbir is paired with Shraddha. Anubhav Singh Bassi, Dimple Kapadia, and Boney Kapoor also play supporting roles in the film.
