The Pongal festival saw one of the largest box office fights in Tamil film as Vijay’s ‘Varisu’ and Ajith Kumar’s ‘Thunivu’ were released on the same day. As both movies have finished their 25-day theatrical runs, Varisu has surpassed Thunivu at the box office, with worldwide gross earnings of over $300 crore to over 250 crore.
Both movies are practically over with their current runs in theaters. Despite their differences, both have proven to be successful businesses, according to trade sources. The family drama ‘Varisu,’ which features Vijay, centres on the youngest son’s attempt to take over his father’s business empire while facing fierce opposition from his two older siblings.
The movie, which was also Vijay’s Telugu debut, was directed by Vamshi Paidipally and also had a Tamil and a Telugu version. In order to officially declare that ‘Varisu’ has surpassed the Rs. 300 crore club internationally, the movie’s creators have unveiled a poster.
This is Vijay’s second film to gross $300 million worldwide, following the action drama ‘Bigil’ (2019), which was centred around football. Bigil, which was directed by Atlee, also starred Nayanthara.
In Tamil Nadu, Varisu and Thunivu were both released on an equal number of screens. Shows were scheduled as early as 1 am, so fans celebrated the debut of both movies in full force by staying up all night. Ajith, producer Boney Kapoor, and director H Vinoth worked together once again for Thunivu. Manju Warrier also had a significant part in the movie.
A bank is the setting for the robbery action drama Thunivu. Ajith was portrayed in the movie as a villain who leads the gang that robs a bank while holding hostages.
Vijay is currently filming ‘Leo,’ which would be his first collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj since ‘Master.’ It also stars Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Mysskin, Gautham Menon, and Priya Anand. It is anticipated to be a high-octane mafia movie.
‘Leo’ was recently announced in a promotional video by the film’s creators. The team is presently filming the first schedule in Kashmir, where the promo was exclusively shot.
